School psychologists play a significant role in this decision by helping to determine the eligibility of children for services. They also develop and oversee many interventions necessary for these children to function effectively within an inclusive educational environment. Shortages in the profession, however, remain prevalent despite a mounting need for qualified practitioners. Given the number of children affected by such shortages nation-wide, a study of the factors related to attrition among school psychologists is worthy of investigation. This research project reviewed the prevailing literature on attrition and job satisfaction in the field of school psychology. It examined the personal and professional factors related to the decision to remain in the profession. It concluded with recommendations for future research and practice.
